Over the weekend, action from the 2011 National Heads-Up Poker Championship carried on Sunday. The pairings from the opening round in Spades, Clubs, and Diamonds brackets and the field was chopped from 64 players to 32.
The second hour began with action from the Clubs bracket, where the featured pairing was Liv Boeree against “Seinfeld” actor Jason Alexander. Seated at the secondary feature table were WSOP Circuit terror Dwyte Pilgrim and Olivier Busquet. Alexander was the first elimination; he could not withstand Boeree’s hearts.
Busquet ultimately demoted the chirpy Pilgrim to the rail. Elsewhere in the makeshift Caesars Palace poker room, Ted Forrest was bounced for an open-ender against Jason Mercier. Meanwhile, EPT Grand Final winner Nicolas Chouity moved all-in pre-flop with pocket jacks against Victory Poker pro Antonio Esfandiari. Finally, reigning WSOP Main Event winner Jonathan Duhamel also made the cut.

2010 Bluff Magazine Player of the Year Sorel Mizzi is in midst of yet another cheating scandal.
Oly days after Mizzi’s Full Tilt Poker account was re-established after a two-and-a-half year ban, some thread accused him of cheating November Niner John Racener out of thousands of dollars during the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) at Chinese Poker in January. Shaun Deeb on behalf of Racener posted the details of the incident, who gave Deeb permission to relay the story to the poker community.
Mizzi, who’s had a history of cheating allegations, posted his side of the story later in which he denied the accusations. He also contested Racener’s claim that Mizzi blamed the incident on prescription drugs curtailing from a recent death in his family.
Sorel Mizzi is a very talented player, no doubt about that. Nevertheless, he did win the 2010 Player of the Year Award by Bluff Magazine; on top of a very fat bank account.
When Day 4 of the EPT Vienna Main Event began, there were a few assurances and plenty of unanswered questions. Play started with Daniel Negreanu close to the top of the chip counts and, as many expected, he ended that way and will be entering the final table with a sizable chip lead and 5,070,000 chips.
Negreanu’s journey to the final table may have been smooth, but several other players had a much more difficult time as the field played down from 24 to the eight who made the final table. Antonio Buonanno was knocked back to only a handful of chips, handled to rally, but eventually he busted in 17th place. Negreanu is not the lone Team PokerStars Pro who will be emerging at Sunday’s final table. Martin Hruby has preserved a big stack for the duration of this event, though he will be one of the short stacks on Day 5.
When play recommences for the final table, blinds will be at 20,000/40,000 ante 4,000. Play will continue until they have a champion, who will receive €700,000 for his efforts.

Daniel Negreanu holds a massive chip lead ahead of the final day of the EPT Vienna as he vies to become only the third player to win WPT, WSOP and EPT titles. Negreanu began the day just off the lead, which was held by German-based Greek Konstantinos Nanos, and the two continued in first and second for quite some time as the shorter stacks slowly fell away, including the last of the Brits, Surindar Sunar, who departed in 18th for €16,000, after having spent seemingly the entire tournament short-stacked.
Negreanu clashed several times with German Michael Eiler during the day, with the 20-year old student having the better of the early exchanges until he lost three million chips when Negreanu hit a set of sevens on the turn. Eiler dropped nearly two million chips in the last hourbut remains very much in contention in third place with more than two million chips.
Negreanu certainly enjoyed certain amount luck along the way, disposing of Italian Umberto Vitagliano with QJs against Vitagliano’s AK. If vitagliano was unlucky then Denmark’s Erlandsen was even more so and the very next hand Negreanu repeated the trick against Eiler.

HR 2267, the bill penned by Democratic Representative Barney Frank, is going to have a hard time being passed before the 2010 midterm elections. This bill, also known as the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, has several problems before being pushed through in the Senate.
One of the problems that the bill has encountered is that there is no supporting companion bill for it. While Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat, has introduced a companion bill called S 1597 or the Internet Poker and Game of Skill Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement act of 2009, he has not been able to get any co-sponsorship from his fellow Senators. Another problem for HR 2267 is the delay of its companion bill that addresses the taxation issues. The Internet Gambling Regulation and Tax Enforcement Act of 2009 or HR 2268 has no vote yet from the House of Ways and Means Committee, so there would be no way to tax the industry if ever HR 2267 is enforced.
Recently, BBC initiated few investigations with regards to online poker and the cheating scam. The story circulates with the Chinese collusion scandal with PokerStars Tom Broadbent. Aside from Broadbent other player such as Aaron Todd was involved, as he stated in an interview, “There are varying degrees to which collusion happens but it is pretty easy to figure out when it’s going on, and it’s not extremely common. The vast majority of games, at least 95% and probably more, are completely above board.” In addition to his statement, “Cheating can happen in live poker, too, but the one advantage that you have if you play online is that the sites keep track of every single poker hand played, so it’s easy to go back and investigate.”

When Day 3 of the $3,000 H.O.R.S.E. event started, 25 players were still in strife for this World Series of Poker bracelet, a good number of them with multiple bracelets of their own already, but when the final card was dealt early Tuesday morning, it was the most dreaded man in poker, Phil Ivey, who stood alone with his eighth World Series of Poker bracelet.
All through the marathon Day 3, most people watching clearly saw Ivey making a run, but it never seemed like a dead bolt. It was the stud games that position him up, and in the duration of one seven-card stud round, and one Razz round, Ivey came from about 100,000 to over a million in chips.
At the final table, Ivey failed to secure a massive chip lead, but he did play the role of a slayer. The win was Ivey’s first bracelet this year and eighth taken as a whole. For his attempts, he collected $329,840, though like last year, it’s likely to be a lot further than that because of numerous WSOP bracelet bets.
