Liars Have no Escape at the Poker Table

If you think some is lying to you in a game you may want to use this technique. Try to change your topic quickly and check out the reaction of the one your talking with. If he’s willing to let the topic change then obviously he or she is lying to you. And if he or she questioned you on the sudden change of topic and tried to get you back in the old one then that’s the honest one.

Identifying a liar in poker has everything to do with talking. That’s why many great players are talkative. This is their way of picking a tell and getting to know your reactions when you’re feeling troubled or not. They also try to get your genuine natural reactions for them to use against you on the game.

One good instance of a conversation to pick a tell is about “Amarillo Slim” Preston. There was a time that Slim really had this hate thing against lady poker players. During his career, he encountered a very good player who is a woman. With this challenge in tow, Slim has no chance to play around, he wanted to win so that he won’t have a chance to be embarrassed.

During the match, Slim eavesdropped on a conversation going on about how the lady player adore her drink. He saw genuine emotion there and glad that he had that info. Later on the game he will use that info in order to pick a tell from the lady by asking her how much he like her hand. He’s good!

However, as the game progresses the lady took the hint and started to ignore Slim on the game by wearing headphones. Slim and her enjoyed wiping the floor clean till the game ends.

In addition, there are other ways in picking a tell through conversing and observing other people’s reactions.

Check this out. A man called John is a forthright poker player and you’re playing against him. Early on the game, you saw him watching a close baseball game and he showed hints that he had money at stake on the game. Fortunately, the team his betting won and you ask him if he has money on it. He answered you yes and showed this big smirk on his face.

Now, you had a one on one huge bet against John and you wanted to make sure if he’s hand is good or he’s just bluffing. To know about that, you told him that you have a pretty big set of hand. He showed the same smirk you see when he won the bet on the baseball game. He’s definitely giving out a tell.

If you want to use other people’s natural reaction as a weapon against them in poker then it will be better if you see it first hand before or during the game. Observe how your opponents act truly and use it to know if they are bluffing you in poker or not.
